Olympic Swimming Pool

The outdoor swimming pool close to my place closed its doors for the winter break last sunday. If I want to swim in a 50m-pool I therefore have to go to the indoor swimming pool located in the „Olympiapark“ in the north of Munich. As far as I know this is the only indoor 50m-pool in Munich. Unfortunately it’s not that close to where I live, i.e. it takes me around 45min to get there. But as I had the day off today I took the chance and checked out the olympic swimming pool. To get to the pool I walked through the „Olympiapark“ and passed by the „BMW World“ (museum). The „Olympiapark“ was the site of the Olympic Games in 1972 and comprises several buildings, a lot of green space and a nice lake. I was very impressed by the location, it’s a beautiful place. And on top of all the swimming pool is really amazing … awesome! It’s huge with large windows and very open-spaced. I have never been to such a bright and scenic pool before (and I have already been to quite a few pools ;-)). If you ever have the chance, go there.

A Great Weekend in Munich: Day 2

On sunday, the second day of visit, the four of us headed off early in the morning to the English Garden for the „Monopteros-Lauf„. This running event is used as training event for participants of the Munich Marathon which takes place in mid-October. The 14km through the English Garden were very idyllic and it was a lot of fun taking part.

After lunch, we set off towards the „Oktoberfest“ in Munich city. On our way to the „Theresienwiese“ we passed by St. Paul church where we spontaneously decided to climb up the approx. 250 stairs to get a view from the steeple. The view up there was amazing! I enjoyed the 360° view over Munich (somehow), but I was very glad when we arrived safe again back on the ground. When we finally arrived at the „Theresienwiese“, we strolled through the fairground with many different market stalls and „Bierzelte“. The „Oktoberfest“ remembered me a lot of the „Herbstmesse“ in Basel: a lot of different food, a lot of sweets („Krachmandlä“, „Magäbroot“, and even something which looked like „Beggeschmütz“) and many funfair rides. However, there were definitely also many passed out drunks around. Still, all together I must admit that I was surprised in a positive sense from the „Oktoberfest“.

In the evening, my friends headed off back towards Zurich. It was a great weekend … thanks again to all of you for giving me such a good time!

A Great Weekend in Munich: Day 1

On the weekend, my dear friends from Zurich – D., S. and S. – paid me a visit in Munich. It was great seeing you and having you here! Saturday was sightseeing-day. First thing todo on our plan was the outdoor swimming pool in Haar ;-). After that we took the train and tram to go to Munich downtown. On our way there, we admired a nice fountain at „Ostbahnhof“. Later, we crossed the Isar before we arrived at the „Max-Joseph-Platz“ with the „Nationaltheater“ and the „Bayerische Staatsoper“. From there we walked to the „Odeonsplatz“ and the impressive „Theatinerkirche“ (church).

After we had examined the church from out- and inside, we went towards the „Marienplatz“. On our way there, we took a detour through the „Dallmayr“ fine food shop. Oh, what a great place! So many nice things … from bread (even BUTTERZOPF!), to chocolate and pralinés, to special alcohol (like the nice sweet italian liquor LIMONCELLO), to many other delicious things. Then, we went to have a look at the more famous landmarks of Munich, like the „Rathaus“ at the „Marienplatz“and the Viktualienmarkt. We also strolled along „Kaufingerstrasse“ towards „Karlsplatz“ (Stachus).

The energy we had lost during the day, walking from one place to the other, we regained at Woerner’s with coffee and cake. We completed the day with beer (and sparkling water ;-)) in a traditional Munich restaurant, the „Augustiner am Platzl“.

Day Trip to Ingolstadt

Last weekend I visited my friend S. in Ingolstadt (Ingolstadt). We met to go the cinema to see „Ich – einfach unverbesserlich 2“ („Despicable Me 2“) … very funny movie by the way  ;-)! We also did a short stroll through Ingolstadt downtown and thereby almost got into a demo. In bavaria, there are elections next weekend for the Land- and Bundestag which means it is a lot of campaign going on at the moment. But besides the demo, the city center of Ingolstadt was very nice and peaceful (see picture).

Ingolstadt

My friend S. and I then decided to spend the rest of the afternoon at Ingolstadt village which is an outlet shopping mall a little bit outside the center of Ingolstadt (IngolstadtVillage). Fortunately I did not have a lot of money with me to spend … there is a Lindt outlet tore … LINDT OUTLET STORE … in the village!!! It is not comparable to the store in Kilchberg, but still the choice of products and the prices were very tempting. Now I know where to go when I have my next home sickness attack.

Moving around Munich

It’s been a while since my latest blog entry. A lot was happening during the last month … most importantly I moved from the shared flat in Munich city to my own apartment in the east of Munich. I live now just across the city border, which means I have a very nice view from my bedroom window to a row of trees (see picture). This is very different to what I am used to from my former places (Munich and Zurich), but I guess I will get used to it ;-). Close to my house there is one outdoor and two indoor swimming pools and I already found some nice tracks for running. I’m on my way to settling down.
